Skagway, Alaska Cruise Tour Shore Excursion
When
gold was discovered in the Klondike region of the Yukon Territory (just across
the border from Alaska), it resulted in the historic Gold Rush of 1898. As
thousands of gold-crazed adventurers sought the best starting point for their
arduous trek, they found the deepest penetration possible by boat was at the
northern tip of the Lynn Canal. This is how Skagway was born.
Skagway is located at the northern end of the Inside Passage on the Lynn Canal in the Southeastern Alaska Panhandle. The major portion of Skagway is just 4 1/2 blocks wide and 23 blocks long. This Gold Rush Town was founded in 1897, and has survived a variety of economic booms and busts. For more than 80 years, Skagway has been home to the White Pass & Yukon Route railroad, a narrow gauge railroad that did extend 110 miles from the tidewaters of Skagway to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada.
Organized tours of Skagway may include stops at the Trail of '98 Museum, Gold Rush Cemetery and viewing Skagway from the lookout perched on a mountainside above the city. Comfortable motor coach tours are available to the Yukon community of Carcross. Visitors can view the region by air, sea, or land.
