Ketchikan, Alaska Cruise Shore Excursions (cont)
If you love the water but have no interest in fishing, a Misty Fjords one-day cruise is a great way to take a Ketchikan tour. Can't decide whether you want to take a Ketchikan tour by water or air? No problem! Take a seaplane tour, and get the best of both worlds!
An outstanding collection
of totem poles make a visit to Ketchikan essential for anyone interested in
Native art. Native culture and art flourishes throughout Southeast Alaska.
Totem poles, dances, and tribal houses are all accessible from Ketchikan, most
only a short walk of drive away. North of town is Totem
Bight
State Park, which boasts a wonderful
collection of famous poles along with a Native community house. In town, the
Totem Heritage Center is not to be missed. On display are a large number of
poles that were found in abandoned villages. Finally, the Southeast Alaska
Discovery Center offers more totem poles, baskets, and a wealth of information
of information about traditional southeast cultures, like the fish camp exhibit.
Ketchikan's name supposedly comes from the native term "Katch Kanna", which roughly translates: "spread wings of a thundering eagle" and rightly named, for you only need to look along the water line and you're likely to see many bald eagles on waterside perches. The Tongass National Forest, the nation's largest national forest, covers most of Southeast Alaska, surrounding the famous Inside Passage. It offers unique chances to view eagles, bears, spawning salmon, and the breath-taking vistas of "wild" Alaska.
