Scandinavia-Russia Cruise Tour Excursions by Mona Potts (Private tours coordinated through Port Promotions.)
A group of 38 cruised on Celebrity Cruises Constellation in July 2007. The cruise started in Dover and then had a day at sea, which was very smooth sailing. Our first port of call was Oslo, Norway where the main attraction was the Vigeland Sculpture Garden with all of the beautiful hand carved sculptures and the lovely flower gardens. Oslo was the former site of the 1952 Olympics where the group toured the ski jump area and I rode the ski jump simulator which was a great experience.
The next port of call was Gdansk, Poland where they toured the Malbork Castle and had a Polish lunch. Poland and the Baltic area is noted for its amber and I had to purchase some amber jewelry as gifts for my family.
From Poland we went to St. Petersburg, Russia spending two days drinking in the beauty of the fantastic old buildings. We toured the Hermitage Museum, the Peter and Paul Cathedral, Palaces of Katherine the Great and the PeterHof Castle where we had lunch. My favorite was Katherine the Great. Many of the group purchased Faberge Egg pendant jewelry at this stop.
In Helsinki, Finland, we had scenic tours of the city, the Viking Museum and the Olympic Stadium.
Stockholm, Sweden was the next stop where the main attraction was the Vasa Museum This dealt with the 17th Century Flag Ship Vasa which sank on its maiden voyage and was discovered in 1956 and raised in 1961. The intricate carvings one the ship were of special interest.
Of interest in Tallinn, Estonia was the old city with its cobblestone streets and castle.
