Juneau, Alaska Cruise Tour Excursions
Juneau, the capital of Alaska, was founded during a gold rush in 1880.
A first rush of about 40 miners brought trading posts, saloons, and missionaries. Within a year, the tent camp became a small town, the first founded after Alaska’s purchase from Russia.
Today,
the former gold-mining town counts among its riches some of Alaska’s most
spectacular scenery. Called America’s most scenic state capital, Juneau is
surrounded by intercoastal waterways, lush rainforests, rugged mountainsides and
awe-inspiring, accessible glaciers.
Travelers can hike miles of scenic trails through temperate rainforests, tidal beaches and up mountains capped by alpine meadows. The area's stunning beauty is best viewed from the air and sea. Helicopters and fixed-wing air craft whisk visitors up to the spectacular Juneau Ice field, while fleets of marine vessels stand ready to provide personal encounters with Southeast Alaska’s abundant aquatic wildlife. View the Mendenhall Glacier, the state's top attraction. Its impressive face is roughly 100 feet high and 1.5 mile wide. The U.S. Forest Service observatory provides visitors with rare insight to glacial movements. The Mendenhall Glacier, an arm of the 1,500 square mile Juneau Ice field, is one of the few glaciers in Alaska you can reach by car. The outstanding hiking, kayaking, sport fishing, fly fishing, whale watching and wildlife viewing add to the city’s distinctive character. With Glacier Bay National Park, Tracy Arm, and Admiralty Island National Monument nearby, Juneau offers all the experiences for which Alaska is legendary. (Next)
